A RESOLUTION RECOGNIZING FORMER DEPUTY PRINCIPAL CHIEF HASTINGS SHADE AS A NATIONAL TREASURE OF THE CHEROKEE NATION
Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;
 
WHEREAS, Hastings Shade, a lifelong resident of Lost City, Oklahoma passed from this life on February 10, 2010;
 
WHEREAS, Hastings Shade served as Deputy Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation from 1999 to 2003;
 
WHEREAS, Hastings was a full blood, bilingual Cherokee citizen, the son of Tom and Leanna Stopp Shade, husband of Loretta Shade, the father of three sons and a descendant of Sequoyah, inventor of the Cherokee syllabary;
 
WHEREAS, Hastings was foremost a gentleman and traditionalist, fluent in the Cherokee language and conversant in Cherokee thought, with a great depth of Cherokee knowledge and wisdom to share;
 
WHEREAS, Hastings Shade had a strong commitment to children and to teaching Cherokee language, culture and history, and will forever remain an inspiration to all who knew him.
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that Nation hereby recognizes former Deputy Principal Chief Hastings Shade as a National Treasure of the Cherokee Nation for his cultural contributions, encouragement and statesmanship to the Cherokee people.
