Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;
 
WHEREAS, the mission of the Administration for Native Americans is to support projects that contribute to the social development and self-sufficiency of Native communities through the preservation and maintenance of Native languages;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation desires to implement a Cherokee Language Revitalization project as set forth by the Esther Martinez Native American Language Preservation Act to work toward the goal of achieving fluency in the Cherokee language and academic proficiency for all students attending the Tsunadeloquasdi Cherokee Language Immersion School;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation herby commits to securing the required 20% match for the entire project period through cash or in-kind services.
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Tribal Council hereby authorizes the submission of a proposal in an amount not to exceed $375,000 a year for three years to the Administration for Native Americans to support planning, designing and implementing Cherokee language instructional materials and activities, facilitating intergenerational teaching of the Cherokee language, and enhancing teacher training for the Tsunadeloquasdi Cherokee Language Immersion School; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Principal Chief (or his designee) shall be authorized to conduct contract negotiations and execute all official documents in this regard.
