A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE SUBMISSION OF A GRANT APPLICATION TO THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES ADMINISTRATION FOR NATIVE AMERICANS

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;
 
WHEREAS, the mission of the US DHHS Administration for Native Americans is to support projects that contribute to the social development and self-sufficiency of Native communities through the preservation and maintenance of Native languages;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation desires to implement a Cherokee Language Preservation and Maintenance program to support implementation of a distance learning Cherokee language instruction program for K-12 schools and Cherokee Nation tribal citizens which supports the Cherokee Nation's long-range language revitalization goals;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation hereby commits to securing the required 20% match for the entire project period through in-kind or cash services.
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Tribal Council of the Cherokee Nation authorizes the submission of a proposal in an amount not to exceed $1,125,000 for three years and commits to providing the required 20% match for the entire project to the US DHHS Administration for Native Americans to provide an on-line Cherokee language instruction program for students in K-12 schools and other tribal citizens who reside both within and outside the Cherokee Nation tribal jurisdictional service area.
