A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE SUBMISSION OF A FUNDING APPLICATION TO CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION FOR A CHEROKEE NATION COORDINATED SCHOOL HEALTH PROGRAM
Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;
 
WHEREAS, childhood obesity, tobacco abuse, and inactivity continue to be leading indicators of future chronic diseases such as diabetes, heart disease, and cancer;
 
WHEREAS, the program is designed to assist schools in developing and implementing programs to improve the health of youth and prepare them to be healthy adults;
 
WHEREAS, the program will establish or strengthen systematic procedures to monitor critical
Health related behaviors among high school students within the Cherokee Nation TJSA, and also enable the Cherokee Nation to help school districts implement a Coordinated School Health Program;
 
WHEREAS, this program will increase effectiveness of polices and practices to promote physical activity, improve nutrition, and reduce tobacco use among students. The program also increases the proportion of students who are physically active, follow nutrition guidelines, and increases tobacco-free environments for youth.
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Principal Chief and the Council of the Cherokee Nation hereby authorize a funding application be submitted to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to provide capacity building for coordinated school health programs in schools in the Tribal Jurisdictional Service Area toward the ultimate goal of ensuring a healthy and productive Cherokee Nation.
