A RESOLUTION CONFIRMING THE APPOINTMENT OF MELANIE KNIGHT AS SECRETARY OF STATE OF THE CHEROKEE NATION

Body

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;

WHEREAS, the Secretary of State is authorized in Article VII Section 12 of the Constitution of the Cherokee Nation;

WHEREAS, according to the Constitution, the Secretary of State shall be appointed by the Principal Chief and confirmed by the Council of the Cherokee Nation;

WHEREAS, the Principal Chief has appointed Melanie Knight to the Office of the Secretary of State, to fulfill the duties and responsibilities of Secretary of State as prescribed by the Principal Chief pursuant to Article VII Section 12 of the Constitution;

WHEREAS, Melanie Knight is duly qualified to fill this position.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that Melanie Knight is hereby confirmed as Secretary of State of the Cherokee Nation, to fulfill the duties as specified in the Constitution of the Cherokee Nation and as prescribed by the Principal Chief for a term beginning August 14, 2007 and ending August 14, 2011.
