A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE SUBMISSION OF A GRANT APPLICATION TO THE CENTERS FOR DISEASE CONTROL AND PREVENTION FOR FUNDING USE TRADITIONAL FOODS AND SUSTAINABLE ECOLOGICAL APPROACHES FOR HEALTH PROMOTION AND DIABETES PREVENTION IN AMERICAN INDIAN/ALASKA NATIVE (AI/AN) COMMUNITIES
Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;
 
WHEREAS, diabetes continues to be a leading cause of morbidity and mortality in Native Americans living in the Cherokee Nation;
 
WHEREAS, the program will support community use of traditional Cherokee foods and sustainable ecological approaches for diabetes prevention and health promotion and engage Cherokee communities;
 
WHEREAS, the program will identify and share the stories of healthy traditional Cherokee ways of eating, being active, and communicating health information and support for diabetes prevention and wellness.
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Council of the Cherokee Nation hereby authorizes a funding application be submitted to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention to support community use of traditional Cherokee foods and sustainable ecological approaches for diabetes prevention and health promotion and engage Cherokee communities in the Tribal Jurisdictional Service Area toward the ultimate goal of ensuring a healthy and productive Cherokee Nation, and that the Principal Chief (or his designee) be authorized to execute all official documents in this regard.
