A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE ESTABLISHMENT OF A CHEROKEE NATION CONSERVATION DISTRICT
Body
WHEREAS, The Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government on behalf of the Cherokee people;
WHEREAS, The Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;
WHEREAS, The Council of the Cherokee Nation is authorized to establish laws which it shall deem necessary and proper for the good of the Nation;
WHEREAS, The Council of the Cherokee Nation recognizes the importance of addressing Food, Agriculture and Natural Resource needs within the exterior boundaries of the Cherokee Nation jurisdictional area through the utilization of the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) programs and other federal programs and technical assistance and to increase Indian farmers and ranchers opportunities to own, operate and retain farms and ranches, care for natural resources, strengthen the health and welfare, and
WHEREAS, Technical and cost-share assistance provided by the USDA is most effectively provided through a Tribal districts’ leadership and Long-Range Natural Resource Plan, and
WHEREAS, A Cherokee Nation Conservation District will, subject to the approval of the Principal Chief or his designee, have the authority to work cooperatively with other agencies and boards to develop a Natural Resources Long-Range Plan for the Cherokee Nation which will establish priorities under which the USDA agencies will operate within the jurisdictional boundaries of the Cherokee Nation, now
THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED: The Council of the Cherokee Nation authorizes the Principal Chief of the Cherokee Nation to establish the Cherokee Nation Conservation District, defined by the exterior boundaries of the Cherokee Nation with the authority, subject to the approval of the Principal Chief or his designee, to enter into agreements with U...
