A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE SUBMISSION OF A GRANT APPLICATION TO ADMINISTER A GRANT IN PARTNERSHIP WITH COMMUNITY ORGANIZATIONS

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation has a responsibility to promote the well being of its citizens;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation covers a huge geographic area extending over 14 counties in Northeast Oklahoma;
 
WHEREAS, much of the Cherokee population is organized into rural communities that are distinct and unique;
 
WHEREAS, the building of strong communities requires a partnership among communities and the Cherokee Nation;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is committed to providing training and technical assistance to community organizations in order to encourage the establishment and operation of services and activities at the community level;
 
WHEREAS, Health & Human Services (HHS) has available a program of training and technical assistance, including sub-awards to community organizations to strengthen their infrastructure, that would allow the tribe to provide such training and technical assistance to community organizations;
 
WHEREAS, HHS requires applicants to provide a 20% match above the grant amount;
 
WHEREAS, the Council supports leadership in Cherokee communities in their work to grow and serve their communities.
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Council does commit the use of $100,000 of tribal monies to match HHS funds and endorses the application for a grant to service community organizations.
