Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self government in behalf of the Cherokee people; and

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United Sates of American; and

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation has a responsibility to promote the well being of tribal members;

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation covers a large geographic area extending over 14 counties in Northeast Oklahoma with much of the Cherokee population organized into rural communities that are distinct and unique;

WHEREAS, the tribe is committed to increasing community policing strategies that strengthen partnerships for safer communities;

WHEREAS, enhancing tribal law enforcement’s ability to increase public safety through the implementation of community policing strategies and promoting collaboration between law enforcement and community members to develop innovative initiatives to prevent crime in the Cherokee Nation jurisdiction;

WHEREAS, the COPS Tribal Resources Grant Program 2009 grant will strengthen partnerships for safer communities and enhance the Cherokee Nation law enforcement’s capacity to prevent, solve and control crime through funding for technology, equipment and training;

WHEREAS, grant funds are available through the Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services, Tribal Resources Grant Program 2009 in the amount of $400,000.00, with no matching funds required.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Council hereby authorizes the Cherokee Nation Marshal Service to submit a grant application to the Department of Justice, Office of Community Oriented Policing Services for funding under the Tribal R...
