A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING CHEROKEE NATION ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS TO SUBMIT A FORMAL GRANT APPLICATION TO THE EPA DRINKING WATER TRIBAL SET-ASIDE PROGRAM

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation has established the Environmental Protection Commission and the Environmental Programs Group to protect public health, welfare, and the environment;
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation has previously received funding from EPA for water related projects;
WHEREAS, with the award of proper funding, the Cherokee Nation will provide upgrades to the Kenwood Public Water System. By addressing these issues and making necessary upgrades to the current system, the system will meet Federal Drinking Water Standards and provide an adequate supply of safe drinking water for the Kenwood Tribal community and future community based businesses.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Tribal Council hereby authorizes Cherokee Nation Environmental Programs to submit a formal application to the EPA through the 2009 Drinking Water Tribal Set-Aside Program, and that the Principal Chief (or his designee) shall be authorized to conduct contract negotiations and execute all official documents in this regard.
