A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE SUBMISSION OF A GRANT APPLICATION TO THE U. S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES ADMINISTRATION FOR NATIVE AMERICANS

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;
 
WHEREAS, the mission of the Administration for Native Americans is to promote the development of programs or activities for community-based project under the Social and Economic Development Strategies program to promote the goal of economic and social self-sufficiency for American Indian tribes.
 
WHEREAS, the Administration for Native Americans has grant funds to support programs that will develop and implement a comprehensive culturally and socially appropriate project to help Cherokee youth practice personal responsibility; reach a balance in their lives and to practice healthy lifestyles with the goal of decreasing gang activity, school dropout rates and juvenile delinquency.
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Tribal Council of the Cherokee Nation authorized the submission of a proposal in an amount not to exceed $500,000 a year for three years to the Administration for Native Americans to teach Cherokee cultural values and traditional knowledge of healthy life ways through intergenerational youth activities in Cherokee communities.
