A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING A PARTNERSHIP BETWEEN CHEROKEE NATION AND THE BIG BROTHERS AND BIG SISTERS ORGANIZATION FOR THE PURPOSES OF APPLYING FOR AND ADMINISTERING A PROGRAM TO BENEFIT CHEROKEE YOUTH
Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self government on behalf of the Cherokee people; and

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United Sates of America; and

WHEREAS, The Cherokee Nation has a responsibility to promote the well being of tribal members; and

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation wishes to provide every possible opportunity to Cherokee young people; and,

WHEREAS, the Big Brothers Big Sisters Program has requested a partnership with Cherokee Nation to provide Big Brother and Big Service mentoring services to Cherokee youth; and,

WHEREAS, the funds to operate such a program are available in a set aside for Big Brother and Big Sisters and other national organizations; and

WHEREAS, said program may be coordinated through communities or schools; and

WHEREAS, there are many Cherokee community organizations within the tribe located in small, rural Cherokee communities that continue to search for opportunities for their children; and

WHEREAS, a coordinative mechanism exists within Community Development to facilitate such partnerships between Big Brothers and Big Sisters and Cherokee rural communities;

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Council supports and encourages a partnership between the tribe and Big Brothers and Big Sisters program for work in Cherokee communities to benefit Cherokee youth, and does request that Cherokee tribal youth be added to the program of Big Brothers and Big Sisters; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Council requests full consideration from the Department of Justice in funding the addition of Cherokee youth to the Big Br...
