A resolution OF SUPPORT OF REFURBISHMENT AND STABILIZATION OF BUILDINGS LOCATED AT THE CHILOCCO INDIAN AGRICULTURAL SCHOOL
Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;
 
WHEREAS, the Chilocco Indian Agricultural School was established in 1883 on land donated by the Cherokee Nation; and
 
WHEREAS, over 17,000 Native American students attended and over 5,500 Native American students earned high school diplomas at Chilocco Indian Agricultural School from 1883 through 1980; and
 
WHEREAS, the Chilocco campus has over 100 buildings, many with great historical significance, and was a self-contained city; and
 
WHEREAS, these buildings are in a state of disrepair and measures should be taken for their preservation; and
 
WHEREAS, the Chilocco campus has tremendous potential to again be a national center of Native American education and cultural preservation.
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that measures should be taken to restore the Chilocco Indian Agricultural School and that the Council authorizes the Principal Chief to negotiate a contribution and/or loan of up to $300,000.00 to the Chilocco Benefit Association, Inc.; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED, that the Principal Chief or designee is authorized to represent the Cherokee Nation on the Board of the Chilocco Benefit Association, Inc. if requested.
