Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;
 
WHEREAS, the Department of Justice is accepting funding applications for programs to assist formerly incarcerated individuals to successfully reenter their communities;
 
WHEREAS, Career Services has seen a rise in the number of individuals requesting services to assist with their reentry;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is the tribal government with legal authority to implement programs for Cherokee Tribal Citizens and other Native Americans within the Cherokee Nation Tribal Jurisdictional Area;
 
WHEREAS, Career Services has developed the staff and a process to work with formerly incarcerated individuals, but is in desperate need of funding in order to implement a successful program;
 
WHEREAS, Career Services has both the expertise and experience to develop and operate a high quality, successful program and desires to continue providing these services.
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that Career Services develop and submit a grant application to the Department of Justice for a Second Chance Act Comprehensive Community-Based Adult Reentry program Utilizing Mentors Program.
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that Cherokee Nation Career Services has the legal authority to implement such a project within the Cherokee Nation Tribal Jurisdictional Area, including tribal lands.
