A RESOLUTION DIRECTING CHEROKEE NATION HEALTH SERVICES PHARMACY DEPARTMENT TO PROVIDE CERTAIN DIABETIC MEDICATIONS
Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is highly committed to the health of their citizens; and,
 
WHEREAS, pursuant to the American Diabetes Association, Native Americans are at a greater risk of having diabetes than anyone. While many of the U.S. population has some form of this disease, the numbers are twice as high among the Native American populations; and,
 
WHEREAS, due to high diabetes in tribal citizens, the availability for additional diabetes medications is needed such as Victoza which is an injectable prescription medicine that may improve blood sugar; and,
 
WHEREAS,  the Council of the Cherokee Nation wants to direct the Cherokee Nation Health Services Pharmacy Division to include a variety of diabetes medications, specifically including Victoza, in their inventory  and provide them to tribal citizens when physicians prescribe these medications; and, therefore,
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Council of the Cherokee Nation hereby directs the Cherokee Nation Health Services Pharmacy Division to include a number of various types of diabetes medications, specifically including Victoza, in their inventory and provide them to tribal citizens when physicians prescribe these medications.
