WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation recognizes that cancer is one of the leading causes of morbidity and mortality among our citizens;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation has been invited to respond to a request for proposals from the National Cancer Institute;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation has operated the only tribal cancer registry in the United States since 1997.
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Cherokee Nation Cancer Programs, a program of the Health Services Group, will respond to the National Cancer Institute request for proposal to continue the Cherokee Nation Cancer Registry.  The registry will continue to collect cancer information within the 14 county jurisdiction and will continue to support the cancer education and outreach opportunities within Cherokee communities.
