A RESOLUTION SUPPORTING THE PROPOSED CHANGES MADE BY THE BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS TO STRENGTHEN THE INDIAN CHILD WELFARE ACT OF 1978

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people; and,
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America; and,
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation has significant interest in their Cherokee Children and their families; and,
WHEREAS, the Bureau of Indian Affairs has proposed regulations which will govern the implementation of the Indian Child Welfare Act; and,
WHEREAS, as elected representatives of the citizens of the Cherokee Nation, the council wishes to express their support for the proposed regulations implementing the Indian Child Welfare Act; and, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Council of the Cherokee Nation hereby supports the proposed regulations that will implement the Indian Child Welfare Act of 1978, improve the lives of Cherokee children living in foster and adoptive homes throughout the United States, and ensure the continued existence of the Cherokee Nation.
