A RESOLUTION MODIFYING THE REQUIREMENTS TO SERVE ON THE BOARD OF EDUCATION OF CHEROKEE NATION'S SEQUOYAH HIGH SCHOOL
Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;

WHEREAS, the Sequoyah High School Board of Education was created in 1986 by Resolution 72-86 and then the Board of Education created By-laws and Section 3 of their By-laws is the Qualifications of Board Members; and,

WHEREAS, this resolution shall change Section 3 (a), (b) and (c) to state as follows: (a) Board members shall be either citizens of the Cherokee Nation or another tribe or a graduate of Sequoyah High School; (b) If Board Members are citizens of the Cherokee Nation, they must be eligible registered voters and qualified to vote in elections of the Cherokee Nation; and (c) If Board Members are citizens of the Cherokee Nation, they must reside within the boundaries of the fourteen (14) county area of the Cherokee Nation and if a Board Member is a member of another tribe, that tribe must be located in the State of Oklahoma and if a Board Member is a graduate of Sequoyah High School, that person must reside within the State of Oklahoma. The Board must always have a two-thirds majority Cherokee memberhip.

WHEREAS, the Council of the Cherokee wants to make these changes to the Sequoyah High School Board of Education By-laws; and therefore,

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that Section 3 (a), (b) and (c) of the Sequoyah High School Board of Education By-laws are hereby modified to extend qualifications of Board Members which include Cherokee Citizens, Other Tribal Citizens within the State of Oklahoma, and graduates of Sequoyah High School who reside within the fourteen (14) country jurisdiction of the Cherokee Na...
