A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING TRIBAL PARTICIPATION IN A NATIONWIDE NATIONAL INDIGENOUS ELDER JUSTICE INITIATIVE ELDER NEEDS ASSESSMENT

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America, and

WHEREAS, the prevalence of elder abuse, neglect, and exploitation concerns are a developing issue among tribal communities and is an increasing unmet need in tribal communities, and

WHEREAS, in additional to providing technical assistance, the NIEJI Innovation Program is expected to research and disseminate the results of the research, and

WHEREAS, The NIEJI Innovation Program is asking Tribes throughout the nation to volunteer to participate in a partnership arrangement to identify elder maltreatment issues of American Indian, Alaska Native, and Native Hawaiian elders nationwide, in which the NIEJI Innovation program and the Cherokee Nation will each assume responsibilities:

What the NIEJI Innovation program will provide:
Ø Native Elder Maltreatment Survey
Ø Assistance in sampling
Ø Training of interviewers via email or telephone
Ø Consultation with interviewers via email or telephone
Ø Data entry and analysis
Ø Data storage
Ø Production of tables and comparisons with national statistics

What Cherokee Nation will provide:
Ø A Tribal Resolution documenting participation with Native Elder Maltreatment survey as applicable
Ø An estimated number of elders (participants) to interview
Ø Volunteer interviewers to conduct the survey
Ø Development of recommendations for actions
Ø Dissemination of the results to tribal leaders and the Executive Director of Human Services
