A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE GRANT APPLICATION BY CHEROKEE NATION ENVIRONMENTAL PROGRAMS FOR THE BUREAU OF INDIAN AFFAIRS, DEPARTMENT OF THE INTERIOR OFFICE OF INDIAN ENERGY AND ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT, ENERGY AND MINERAL DEVELOPMENT PROGRAM (EMDP) GRANT

Body

WHEREAS, Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;

 

WHEREAS, Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government-to-government relationship with the United States of America;

 

WHEREAS, Cherokee Nation considers its natural energy and mineral resources within its borders to be vital to the livelihood and quality of life of Cherokee people;

 

WHEREAS, Cherokee Nation submits an application to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Department of the Interior Office of Indian Energy and Economic Development for its Energy and Mineral Development Program (EMDP) grant;

 

WHEREAS, upon award of the EMDP grant, Cherokee Nation will conduct renewable energy assessments and feasibility studies for renewable sources of energy such as solar, wind, geothermic, and biomass, on Tribally owned property within its 14-county Tribal Jurisdictional Service Area in northeast Oklahoma; will consider developing any potential viable energy or mineral resource discovered therein; will perform oversight, reporting, and project management of the EMDP project through its Environmental Programs department; and will share information obtained through this proposed EMDP project to the public, via methods such as press releases and presentation at conferences;

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Council hereby authorizes an application for funding to the Bureau of Indian Affairs, Department of the Interior Office of Indian Energy and Economic Development for the Energy and Mineral Development Program grant; and that Principal Chief, Bill John Baker, and/or his designee be authorized to sign documents necessary to submit said application on behalf of the Cherokee Nation.
