WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government on behalf of the Cherokee people;
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation has long acknowledged its role as a steward of the lands and environment that all of the citizens of northeast Oklahoma share;
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation has many citizens engaged in agriculture, and many citizens concerned about the potential impact of some agricultural practices on the air, water and lands located within the Cherokee Nation;
WHEREAS, water and air pollution easily cross the jurisdictional boundaries between the Cherokee Nation and the State of Oklahoma and actions taken within one jurisdiction can have tremendous impacts on citizens living in bordering states or bordering tribes;
WHEREAS, many property owners, poultry producers, poultry integrators, state/tribal agencies and other stakeholders each have a need and desire for a sustainable agricultural industry that is supported by local landowners and communities and not harmful to the environment;
WHEREAS, the Principal Chief and the Governor of the State of Oklahoma have agreed to each appoint a co-chair for a Coordinating Council on Poultry Growth to listen to the concerns of impacted property owners, poultry integrators, poultry producers, environmentalists and other stakeholders and propose solutions that will benefit individuals and businesses located throughout the Cherokee Nation;
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Tribal Council hereby expressly authorizes and fully supports the creation of a Cherokee Nation/State of Oklahoma Coordinating Council on Poultry Production that will examine the expansion of poultry pro...
