A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE PLACEMENT OF LAND IN TRUST - JOHN ROSS MUSEUM

Body

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;

 

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;

 

WHEREAS, Cherokee Nation owns property in Cherokee County, Oklahoma, now known as the John Ross Museum.   Located in the Park Hill community, the property houses the John Ross Museum in the former Rural School #51 building.   Operational from 1918 through the 1950s, the former school grounds are adjacent to the Ross Cemetery.   The John Ross Museum property is further described as follows:

 

Indian Meridian, Oklahoma, Cherokee County

 

Township 16 North, Range 22 East,

 

                     Section 23,                     A parcel of land situated in the NW4 SW4 NW4;

                                          

                                          COMMENCING at the West quarter corner, marked with an Oklahoma                                                                                     Department of Transportation Brass Monument;

                                          

                                          THENCE, North 00˚ 01' 45" West, along the West boundary 659.96 feet to the                                                                SW corner of the NW4 SW4 NW4 and the true POINT OF BEGINNING;

                                          

                                          THENCE, South 89˚ 52' 18" East, along the South boundary of NW4 SW4 NW4,                                                                360.72 feet to a point on West boundary of the Ross Cemetery, as in deed filed                                                                May 27, 1929 in Book 77 Page 98;

                                          

                                          THENCE, North 160 feet along the West boundary of Ross Cemetery as in deed                                                                filed May 27, 1929 in Book 77 Page 98;

                                          

                                          THENCE, North 89˚ 52' 18" West 152.80 feet;

                                          

                                          THENCE, North 00˚ 01' 45" West 152.00 feet;

                                          

                                          THENCE, North 89˚ 52' 18" West 208.00 feet to a point on the West boundary of                                                                Section 23;

 

                                          THENCE, South 00˚ 01' 45" East 312.00 feet to the POINT OF BEGINNING.

                                          Containing 2.05 acres, more or less.  

                                          BASIS OF BEARINGS:  True North

 

WHEREAS, Cherokee Nation desires to transfer fee title to United States of America in Trust for Cherokee Nation under the provisions of Title 25 of the Code of Federal Regulations. 

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Principal Chief of Cherokee Nation, Bill John Baker, and/or his authorized designee(s) be authorized to request the Secretary of the Interior to place said tracts of land in Trust for Cherokee Nation in accordance with Bureau of Indian Affairs policy and procedure for the acquisition of land.
