Title

A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING CHEROKEE NATION OFFICE OF VETERANS AFFAIRS, TO APPLY FOR VETERANS CEMETERY GRANTS PROGRAM ON BEHALF OF  NATION TO ESTABLISH A CHEROKEE VETERAN CEMETERY

Body

WHEREAS, Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government on behalf of the Cherokee people; and

 

WHEREAS, Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government-to-government relationship with the United States of America; and

 

WHEREAS, Cherokee Nation supports the proposed establishment of a Cherokee Veteran Cemetery within the fourteen (14) county jurisdiction of the Cherokee Nation, and the development of a grant application to request necessary funding through the Veteran’s Cemetery Grant Program made available by the Department of Veterans Affairs; and

 

WHEREAS, Cherokee Nation commits and obligates the trust land necessary to operate the cemetery for no less than twenty (20) years. The final site will be subject to approval by the Department of Veterans Affairs; and

 

WHEREAS, Cherokee Nation assumes all responsibility for the operation and maintenance of the Veteran Cemetery in accordance with the operational standards and measures of the National Cemetery Administration; and

 

WHEREAS, Cherokee Nation acknowledges a matching ten percent of the total grant award  financial contribution to begin the design and planning work for the Veteran Cemetery, and is eligible for reimbursement after award; and

 

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, the Council hereby authorizes an application for funding to the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs Veterans Cemetery Grants Program for these purposes; and that Principal Chief, Bill John Baker, and/or his designee is authorized to sign documents necessary to submit said application on behalf of the Cherokee Nation.
