A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORTING THE RENAMING OF THE WASHINGTON REDSKINS
Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government on behalf of the Cherokee people; and
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, Article VI, Section 7, the Constitution of the Cherokee Nation provides the Council the power to establish laws it shall deem necessary and proper for the good of the Nation; and
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation opposes the use of offensive, derogatory, and/or racist depictions of Native Americans as mascots, logos, and sports team names; and
WHEREAS, the name of the professional football team, the Washington “Redskins”, is highly offensive and demeaning to the citizens of the Cherokee Nation and all other Native Americans.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Tribal Council hereby opposes the use of the term “Redskins” as a mascot, logo or sports team name for the professional football team, the Washington “Redskins”, as it is highly offensive and demeaning to the citizens of the Cherokee Nation and further declares on behalf of the citizens of the Cherokee Nation support for the renaming of the Washington Redskins.
