A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE PRESERVATION AND PROTECTION OF THE ANCIENT KITUWAH MOUND IN NORTH CAROLINA
Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self government on behalf of the Cherokee people; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America; and,
 
WHEREAS, Duke Energy of the Carolinas has begun construction of a power substation and multiple towers to run high capacity transmission lines at the Hyatt Creek exit in Whittier, North Carolina; and
WHEREAS, there has been a growing concern over the construction activities of Duke Energy in close proximity to and within the viewshed of the ancient Mothertown, Kituwah; and
 
WHEREAS, Kituwah is the Mothertown of the Cherokee people and the most sacred site for all Cherokees no matter where they live; and
      
WHEREAS, two sites, the mound and its immediate environs, at Kituwah are listed on the National Register of Historic Places; and
 
WHEREAS, the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians was denied the opportunity to have any input and object to this site prior to initiation of construction; and
 
WHEREAS, it is the Cherokee Nation's solemn responsibility and moral duty to care for and protect the Kituwah site from further desecration and degradation by human agency in order to preserve the integrity of the most important site for the origination and continuation of Cherokee culture, heritage, history and identify; and
 
      NOW THEREFORE BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION TRIBAL COUNCIL that it supports all efforts for the preservation of the ancient Mothertown Kituwah and further supports all efforts taken by the Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians in their governments efforts to preserve this historic site.
