A RESOLUTION AUTHORIZING THE SUBMISSION OF A GRANT APPLICATION TO THE U.S. DEPARTMENT OF HEALTH AND HUMAN SERVICES ADMINISTRATION FOR NATIVE AMERICANS

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;
 
WHEREAS, the mission of the Administration for Native Americans is to support projects that contribute to the social development and self-sufficiency of Native communities through the preservation and maintenance of Native languages;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation desires to implement a Cherokee Language Preservation and Maintenance program to support assessment of the status of the Cherokee languages within the Cherokee Nation's jurisdictional service area as well as planning, designing and implementing Cherokee language curriculum and education project to support the tribe language revitalization goals;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation herby commits to securing the required 20% match for the entire project period through cash or in-kind services.
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Tribal Council of the Cherokee Nation hereby authorizes the submission of a proposal in an amount not to exceed $375,000 a year for three years to the Administration for Native Americans to provide a current description of the language status, train and certify teachers and translators in the Cherokee language, and disseminate materials for the teaching and enhancement of the Cherokee language; and
 
BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Principal Chief (or his designee) shall be authorized to conduct contract negotiations and execute all official documents in this regard.
