Victoria and her husband Bruce Vazquez reside and raise cattle at their ranch, in Craig County near Welch, OK. She was born in Claremore Indian Hospital, and raised in Vinita, OK. They have 4 grown children and 9 grandchildren. Victoria is the daughter of Robert Clay and Anna Belle Sixkiller Mitchell and was taught by her mother to make traditional hand built southeastern pottery. Prior to election of tribal councilors, her parents, both Cherokee, were early community representatives in Vinita, attending meetings in Tahlequah, then going back and sharing the news with Cherokees living there.

In September 2012 Victoria was awarded “Cherokee National Treasure – Master Craftsman” by the Cherokee Nation. It is given each year during Cherokee National Holiday, held over Labor Day weekend in Tahlequah, OK, to a few master artists. She joins her late mother, in being honored as such. They are the first mother-daughter duo to receive the award for pottery making.

She was elected Cherokee Tribal Councilor in October 2013 and is currently serving her first four year term, representing Cherokee citizens in Craig, Mayes and Nowata Counties.

In her first year as Tribal Councilor, Victoria was instrumental in securing tribal funds for stipends paid to our current Cherokee National Treasures. This creates an opportunity for teaching their art, craft, language or cultural skills to other young Cherokees, so that our culture will be carried forward to future generations.
