Wanda Claphan Hatfield grew up in the Cherry Tree Community in Stilwell, where she attended and graduated from Stilwell High School. She is a graduate of the University of Oklahoma, holding a bachelor of Science degree in Education, and is an active OU alumni member.

Wanda taught school for 28 years in the Mid-Del School District in Midwest City before retiring.

In addition to being an At-Large Tribal Councilor for the Cherokee Nation, Wanda also devotes much of her time being involved in organizations affecting Native Issues, including the Cherokee Nation Businesses Board of Directors as an advisory member, the Oklahoma City Indian Clinic Board of Directors, and the Murrow Indian Children’s Home Board of Directors. Additionally, Wanda serves as a Native American Tribal Advisor for Oklahoma City Metro Schools in Moore, Mid-Del Schools in Midwest City, as well as working with Johnson O’Malley Committees in Norman, Putnam City, Oklahoma City Schools, Western Heights, Edmond, Yukon and Moore. She is an integral point of contact for Camp ClapHans (a camp for Native youth named after Wanda’s late brother, Sammy Claphan), and works closely with the J.D. McCarty Center in Norman.

Wanda and her late husband, Roger, have one daughter and son-in-law, Tasha and Michael Privett; three grandchildren, Kinley, Jarvis and Ali, all of Oklahoma City.

Wanda enjoys traveling, reading biographies and nonfiction, attending Sooner, Thunder and grandchildren’s sporting events.
