Siyo, nigad

Awohali dawado. My name is Codey Poindexter, I am 26 years old and I represent District 8 - Cherokee Nation Tribal Council. I am originally from Stilwell, but I currently live in Westville, OK. I chose to run for council so I can do my best to serve my people and represent the communities that I came from. Currently I am the youngest member of the Cherokee Nation tribal council, and one of the youngest in history. I obtained my Masters of Legal Studies in Indigenous Peoples Law from the University of Oklahoma in 2022.

I belong to the Paint Clan. I am a descendant of Nancy Ward, Chief Doublehead, and Archibald Campbell who assisted Chief John Ross on the Trail of Tears. In Cherokee culture today, he was the equivalent of a Deputy Chief. He was a member of the old Cherokee Nation tribal council, as well as a prominent Medicine Man.

I am also Mvskoke Creek through my maternal grandfather. My grandfather was a member of the raccoon clan and his tribal town was Hutchechuppa. My family is also descended from Hilabee Harjo, a well respected Creek warrior.

I currently serve as the Co-Chair on the Cultural committee. As a Native artist myself; language, art, traditions, and culture is something I will always be an advocate for. My primary medium is drawing/painting, but I also can make traditional Cherokee Baskets. I have made traditional long bows, which is something I am currently still learning.

I hope to serve you all the best that I can, while representing the communities I come from.
