A RESOLUTION APPLAUDING THE UNITED STATES GOVERNMENT FOR ENDORSING THE UNITED NATIONS DECLARATION OF THE RIGHTS OF INDIGENOUS PEOPLES
Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation, since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee People; and
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continuing government to government relationship with the United States of America; and
 
WHEREAS, the United Nations General Assembly is an international organization with member countries throughout the world; and
 
WHEREAS, the United Nations is cognizant of the rights and privileges that indigenous people have in their homelands; and
 
WHEREAS, the United Nations adopted the "United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People" on September 13, 2007; and
 
WHEREAS, this Declaration reaffirms that, indigenous peoples, in the exercise of their rights, should be free from discrimination and recognizes the rich culture and diversity of indigenous people; and
 
WHEREAS, the United States, by President Barack Obama, endorsed this Declaration on December 16, 2010; and
 
WHEREAS, it is beneficial to the Cherokee Nation, as an indigenous people, that the United States endorses this Declaration, as it promotes the inherent rights of indigenous peoples.
 
THEREFORE, BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION TRIBAL COUNCIL, that the Cherokee Nation expresses its appreciation to President Obama and the United States of America for endorsing the United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous People, as a affirmation of the inherent rights of such peoples.
