A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF THE SEQUOYAH SCHOOLS $65 MILLION CAPITAL PLAN FOR CAPITAL IMPROVEMENT
Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people; and,
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with historic and continual government-to-government relationship with the United States of America; and,
WHEREAS, by Resolution 57-21 of October 19, 2021, the Council of the Cherokee Nation commemorated the 150th Anniversary of Sequoyah Schools and supporting "...an investment of a minimum of $20 million capital investment at Sequoyah Schools..."; and,
WHEREAS, the Council has reviewed the "Sequoyah Schools Capital Plan," submitted by the Principal Chief and attached to this Resolution as Exhibit A, estimated at approximately $65,000,000 to construct, and funded within the American Rescue Plan Act framework described in Resolution 33-23 of October 2, 2023, the Cherokee Nation Respond, Recover and Rebuild Plan; and,
WHEREAS, the Sequoyah Schools Capital Plan represents a substantial generational investment in the education of citizens of the Cherokee Nation and members of other federally recognized tribes who attend or will attend Sequoyah Schools and represented the largest single capital investment in Sequoyah Schools by the Cherokee Nation in the school's 153 years; and,
WHEREAS, Council reserves its constitutional authority of budget appropriation and program oversight, notwithstanding the provisions of this resolution, including being advised by administration of any substantial changes to the Sequoyah Schools Capital Plan; and,
BE IT THEREFORE RESOLVED, BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Council of the Cherokee Nation supports an investment of approximately of $65 million for capital improvements at Sequoyah Schools, known as the Sequoyah Schools Capital Plan, with said plan approved herein and funded under the Cherokee Nation Respond...
