A RESOLUTION REQUESTING MUSEUMS, MEDIA AND OTHER ENTITIES REFER TO LIVING CHEROKEES BY THEIR TRIBAL ENROLLMENT AND/OR AFFILIATION

Body

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people; and

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America; and

WHEREAS, many museums, members of the media and other entities regularly refer to living persons as simply “Cherokee” without further distinction or explanation; and

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation, Eastern Band of Cherokee Indians, and United Keetoowah Band of Cherokee Indians in Oklahoma are each separate tribal sovereigns, recognized by the federal government as the only tribal nations of Cherokees and composed of distinct tribal members; and

WHEREAS, the Council of the Cherokee Nation strongly urges and requests that a living person never be identified or listed simply as “Cherokee” by museums, members of the media, and other entities, but instead identified or listed by the specific federally recognized tribal government in which the person is enrolled and/or affiliated.

BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Council of the Cherokee Nation hereby strongly urges and requests that a living person never be identified or listed simply as “Cherokee” by museums, members of the media, and other entities, but instead identified or listed by the specific federally recognized tribal government in which the person is enrolled and/or affiliated; and

BE IT FURTHER RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Council of the Cherokee Nation is aligned with and supported by the Executive Branch administration of the Cherokee Nation in making this request.
