A RESOLUTION TO COMMENT THE PRESERVATION OF THE NEW ECHOTA HISTORICAL SITE AS A STATE PARK AND CELEBRATE ITS 50TH ANNIVERSARY
Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people; and,
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America; and,
 
WHEREAS, on November 12, 1825, the Cherokee Nation Council passed a resolution making New Echota the Cherokee Nation's capital where the Council had been meeting since 1819 and continued to meet until 1831; and,
 
WHEREAS, on May 12, 2012, New Echota, the historic capital of the Cherokee Nation, will be celebrating its 50th anniversary as a state park; and
 
WHEREAS, it is important for the Cherokee Nation to support the preservation  and celebration of  our culture and historical  sites on behalf of its ancestors, living tribal citizens and our future generations; and
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation desires to recognize this event in preserving such an important part our tribal heritage;
      BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Cherokee Nation recognizes and appreciates the efforts to preserve, honor and celebrate the New Echota historic site that is a significant part of the Cherokee Nation's history and culture.
