A RESOLUTION ESTABLISHING A MEMORIAL HONORING THE CHEROKEE SPEAKERS LOST TO THE COVID-19 PANDEMIC
Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government on behalf of the Cherokee people; and
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America; and
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation has lost many of its Cherokee speakers to the COVID-19 pandemic creating a hardship on numerous Cherokee families and the language and cultural preservation of the Cherokee people; and
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation has determined that in order to honor the Cherokee speakers lost to the COVID-19 pandemic that a memorial should be established at the Durbin Feeling Language Center, and hereby establishes and submits the following resolution.
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Tribal Council hereby authorizes the establishment of a memorial to honor the Cherokee speakers lost to the COVID-19 pandemic to be located at the Durbin Feeling Language Center in Tahlequah, Cherokee Nation.
