A RESOLUTION OPPOSING HUMAN TRAFFICKING AND SUPPORTING PREVENTION AND SERVICES TO TRAFFICKING VICTIMS AND STOPPING HUMAN TRAFFICKING ACROSS THE COUNTRY AND ESPECIALLY IN TRIBAL COMMUNITIES

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;
WHEREAS, the current Miss Cherokee, Christy Kingfisher, has a significant interest in prevention and stopping human trafficking and requests that the Cherokee Nation support this interest; and,
WHEREAS, cases of human trafficking have been reported in all 50 states and all through Indian Country as well where victims of human trafficking include thousands of men, women and children who are trafficked for the purposes of sexual and labor servitude and exploitation; and,
WHEREAS, in a recent 2012 survey of tribal grantees who are funded through the United States Department of Justice and who provide services to tribal victims of crime, 60% of those surveyed said that at least some assistance was needed and several stated a great deal of assistance was needed regarding human trafficking issues in their tribal communities; and, therefore,
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Cherokee Nation supports Miss Cherokee, Christy Kingfisher's interest in human trafficking, acknowledging that human trafficking is an issue in tribal communities, and opposes this terrible crime and its devastating impact on these victims and supports all efforts for prevention, responding to these victims and stopping human trafficking.
