Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people;
 
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a Federally-recognized Tribal Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America;
 
WHEREAS, Cherokee Nation citizens have historically embraced roles of diplomacy;
 
WHEREAS, the United States Representative to the United Nations Human Rights Council, with rank of Ambassador, Department of State is an important and critical position for Indigenous Peoples all over the globe;
 
WHEREAS, President Obama's nomination of Keith Harper, a Cherokee Nation citizen, as the United States United States Representative to the United Nations Human Rights Council, with rank of Ambassador, Department of State would make him the first citizen of a federally recognized tribal nation to serve in an ambassador post and
 
WHEREAS, Keith M. Harper is true to Cherokee cultural values; he has dedicated more than a decade leading a legal team who stood up for Tribal citizens against the unwelcome intrusion  of the federal government, holding the government accountable when it has harmed Indians; fighting against long odds for what is right;
 
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that it firmly supports President Obama's nomination of Keith M. Harper as the United States Representative to the United Nations Human Rights Council, with rank of Ambassador, Department of State and prays for Keith M. Harper's United States Senate confirmation.
