Title
A RESOLUTION IN SUPPORT OF RURAL AREA POST OFFICES WITHIN THE JURISDICTION OF THE CHEROKEE NATION AND THE USPS TULSA PROCESSING AND DISTRIBUTION CENTER
Body
WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation since time immemorial has exercised the sovereign rights of self-government in behalf of the Cherokee people; and,

WHEREAS, the Cherokee Nation is a federally recognized Indian Nation with a historic and continual government to government relationship with the United States of America; and,

WHEREAS, it is beneficial for the Cherokee Nation to advance the quality of life of its citizens and for all peoples of Oklahoma; and,
WHEREAS,  rural post offices and postal services are important to families, community members for their services  and  elders who are unable to travel long distances to obtain postal services which benefits both these community members as well as the fact that these post offices benefit the Cherokee Nation as a whole; and,
WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service proposes to close a great number of rural post offices and stop postal services in several areas within the jurisdiction of the Cherokee Nation and some who are near the Cherokee Nation that serve tribal members; and,
WHEREAS, the United States Postal Service also operates a regional processing and distribution center in Tulsa, Oklahoma and part of Tulsa County is within the Cherokee Nation .  The center is critical to processing and distribution of timely mail delivery within the region, which will also impact Cherokee citizens; and, therefore
BE IT RESOLVED BY THE CHEROKEE NATION, that the Council both requests and encourages the United States Postal Service to reconsider closing rural post offices and the Tulsa Regional USPS Processing and Distribution Center, all within the jurisdiction of the Cherokee Nation recognizing that such closings would be detrimental those citizens in those rural areas, a great number of whom are members of the Cherokee Nation.
